PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Platelets are naturally found in our blood along with red and white blood cells. They are full of growth factors, which are proteins that help the body heal. Platelets trigger various important processes such as new cell generation, cell migration, and differentiation. In PRP therapy for treatment of hair loss the patient’s blood is drawn and run through a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasm from other components of blood. The obtained PRP is then injected in the patient’s scalp. PRP treatment is also used for some other chronic conditions such ligament tears, tennis elbow, jumper’s knee etc. PRP treatment for hair are given every 3-4 weeks and the results show up about three months later in the form of improvement in the number of hair, thickness of hairs and the improved strength of hair roots. PRP has shown some promising results in curing hair loss in small groups of people and there is not a lot of research in its effect in treating androgenetic alopecia and the results are not conclusive. Another major drawback of PRP treatment is that it is a non-standardized procedure i.e. hair treatment clinics use different preparations, and session intervals and injection techniques and therefore the effects of PRP vary from patient to patient.
